How this concrete slab calculator works

Pick the shape that matches your pour. A slab is a flat rectangular volume — length × width × thickness. A footing is a long, narrow strip poured below grade to spread a wall's load. A column (poured in a round sonotube form) is a cylinder. Stairs are treated as a stack of solid rectangular treads, each one taller than the last by one riser height.

Whatever the shape, the calculator adds your waste percentage to cover spillage, an uneven subgrade, and the reality that you'd rather have a little extra on site than stop mid-pour for another bag run. It then converts that adjusted volume two ways: into cubic yards rounded up to the next quarter-yard (how ready-mix plants actually quote a load), and into a bag count for 80, 60, and 50-lb packaged concrete, rounded up to the next whole bag since you can't buy 61.4 bags. Because ready-mix plants sell by the cubic yard, every shape here is effectively a concrete yard calculator first — volume, then bags.

The formula

Volume before waste, in cubic feet, depends on the shape:

slab = L (ft) × W (ft) × [T (in) ÷ 12]
+ edge = [2(L + W) − 4w] × w × max(0, edge depth − T) (monolithic)
circle = π × [D (ft) ÷ 2]² × [T (in) ÷ 12]
tube = π × [(Do ÷ 24)² − (Di ÷ 24)²] × H (ft)
curb = [depth × (curb h + flag t) + gutter w × flag t] ÷ 144 × L (ft)
footing = L (ft) × [W (in) ÷ 12] × [D (in) ÷ 12]
column = π × [Dia (in) ÷ 24]² × H (ft) × count
stairs = Σ over steps i: W (ft) × [run ÷ 12] × [rise ÷ 12 × i]

Then, for every shape:

  • volume with waste = volume × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
  • cubic yards = volume with waste ÷ 27
  • ready-mix order = cubic yards, rounded UP to the next 0.25 yd³
  • bags = ROUND UP(volume with waste ÷ yield) — 0.60 ft³ (80 lb) / 0.45 (60 lb) / 0.375 (50 lb)
  • water (gal) = bag count × 0.75 × (bag weight ÷ 80)
  • weight (lb) = volume with waste × 150 lb/ft³

Cement calculator vs concrete calculator

People search for a cement calculator when they mean this page — worth 30 seconds to untangle, because at the store the words point at different shelves. Cement is the gray powdered binder; concrete is what you actually pour — cement plus sand, gravel aggregate, and water. A bag labeled "concrete mix" already contains everything except the water, which is why this calculator's bag counts assume concrete mix, not straight cement. Buy pure cement for a slab and you'd still need to batch the sand and aggregate separately — a masonry job, not a weekend pour. For slabs, footings, columns, and stairs, a concrete calculator is the right tool, whatever the search box was told.

At 45 bags per yard (27 ÷ 0.60), that same 1.50 yd³ would take about 68 bags bought a full yard-equivalent at a time — but you only need 62, because the calculator sizes bags to your actual adjusted volume, not to a rounded-up yard count. The real decision

Bags or a ready-mix truck?

The math says bags cost more per yard — at the default $6.50 a bag, bagged concrete works out to about $292.50 per cubic yard (45 bags × $6.50) against a typical $165 per yard delivered. So why does anyone buy bags? Because ready-mix plants charge a short-load fee, commonly $75–$200, on small orders — and because a truck needs somewhere to park and a crew ready to move fast when the chute starts pouring.

The other half of the decision is labor you don't see on a receipt: one cubic yard is forty-five 80-lb bags — roughly 3,600 pounds of material through a wheelbarrow or rented mixer, one bag at a time, before the first batch starts to set. That's manageable for a footing; it is not a realistic Saturday for a driveway.

How many 80-lb bags of concrete are in a cubic yard?
Exactly 45, using the standard 0.60 cu ft yield printed on most 80-lb bags (27 cu ft per yard ÷ 0.60 cu ft per bag = 45). Fast-setting or fiber-reinforced mixes sometimes yield slightly less per bag, so check the yield figure on your specific bag before you order — a handful of bags either way changes the math.
Do I need rebar or wire mesh in a slab this size?
For a non-structural slab — a patio, walkway, or shed pad on stable, well-compacted soil — plain concrete with control joints is often adequate. Driveways, slabs carrying a vehicle, slabs over unstable or expansive soil, or anything your code official classifies as structural should be reinforced: wire mesh for basic crack control, or a rebar grid for higher load capacity. How much water do I need per bag?
About 0.75 gallons per 80-lb bag, scaled down for smaller bags — roughly 0.56 gallons for a 60-lb bag and 0.47 gallons for a 50-lb bag. That's a starting point from manufacturer mixing instructions; add water gradually and stop as soon as the mix holds its shape on a trowel without slumping, since too much water weakens the cured concrete.
Can I pour concrete in cold weather?
Below about 40°F, fresh concrete risks freezing before it gains enough strength, which permanently weakens it. Cold-weather pours typically need heated water and aggregate, an accelerator admixture, insulating blankets over the fresh slab, and a longer cure window before the forms come off — see ACI 306R, Guide to Cold Weather Concreting, for accepted practice. Rescheduling for a 45°F+ stretch is the simpler option if you have one.
What's a “short load” fee, and does it apply to me?
Most ready-mix plants set a minimum order — often 3 to 10 cubic yards depending on the plant — and charge a short-load fee, commonly $75–$200 or more, for anything below it, since the truck and driver cost the plant the same whether it's carrying 1 yard or 10. If this calculator's ready-mix order quantity is under roughly 2–3 yards, call ahead and ask about the fee before assuming the per-yard price is your final cost.
How much does a cubic yard of concrete weigh?
About 4,050 pounds — just over two US tons — using the standard 150 lb per cubic foot figure for normal-weight concrete (27 cu ft × 150 lb). That's why the calculator prints a weight line: a "small" half-yard pour is still roughly a ton of material, which matters for what your truck, trailer, or wheelbarrow route can actually handle. Lightweight and heavyweight mixes exist, but everything sold in bags at a US home center is normal-weight.
What is a monolithic (thickened-edge) slab, and does it need more concrete?
A monolithic slab — also called a floating or thickened-edge slab — pours the slab and its perimeter footing as one piece: the field of the slab might be 4 inches thick while the outer 12 inches or so drops to a 12-inch-deep edge. It is a common choice for sheds and detached garages where codes allow it. It absolutely needs more concrete than a flat slab of the same footprint — that extra perimeter volume is exactly what the "Thickened edge" toggle in this calculator adds, so you are not under-ordering by a dozen bags.
How is a round column or sonotube calculated differently from a slab?
A slab is a rectangular prism — length × width × thickness. A column poured in a round sonotube form is a cylinder, so the math switches to π × radius² × height. This calculator handles that switch automatically when you choose “Column / sonotube” — enter the tube's diameter, since that's what's printed on the form packaging, and it converts to a radius for you.
