Building & Exterior

Outdoor structures are takeoff problems in disguise: a fence is a run length that becomes posts, rails, and pickets; a roof is a footprint that becomes squares and bundles. These five calculators do the conversion, then price the job with labor broken out.

The workflow

From a run length to a fence materials list

A wood fence is arithmetic all the way down. Posts sit at fixed spacing — typically 8 feet — so a 100-ft run needs ⌈100 ÷ 8⌉ + 1 = 14 posts, each set in concrete (usually two 50-lb bags per hole). Rails run two or three per section depending on height; pickets divide the run length by picket width plus gap. The fence calculator turns one run length and a height into that whole list — posts, rails, pickets, concrete bags, and hardware — so nothing gets discovered mid-build at the store.

Pricing a fence is a different question from counting its parts, because material choice dominates: wood, vinyl, and chain-link installed costs differ by 2–3× at the same run length, and slope, gates, and old-fence teardown each move the number. The fence installation cost calculator prices the same run as low/typical/high ranges for each material, with the DIY-labor saving shown separately so you can see exactly what swinging the post-hole digger yourself is worth.

Overhead

Roofs: squares, pitch, and why area lies

Roofing has its own unit — the "square," 100 sq ft — and its own trap: your house's footprint is not your roof's area. A pitched roof is longer than the floor beneath it by a pitch multiplier (a 6/12 roof is ~11.8% larger; a steep 12/12 roof ~41.4%), and shingles ship three bundles to the square. The roofing calculator applies the real multiplier for your pitch, adds the waste that hips, valleys, and starter courses consume, and outputs squares, bundles, underlayment rolls, and a replacement cost range.

Weight is worth checking before tear-off day: shingles run roughly 2.4 tons per 20 squares, which is what your dumpster quote and your trailer axle both care about. The calculator prints it alongside the bundle count.

Bigger builds

Decks and garages: budget by assembly, not vibes

Once a structure has framing, the honest way to budget it is by assembly. The deck cost calculator splits a deck into framing, decking surface, railing, and footings — because the pressure-treated-versus-composite decision only moves the surface and railing lines, not the frame — and the garage cost calculator does the same for slab, framing, roofing, doors, and electrical on attached and detached builds.

Both tools show every line as an editable range reviewed July 2026, because lumber and labor move with region and season. Enter a local quote into any line and the totals re-rank instantly — that's the point of an itemized budget: it shows which line is worth negotiating.
