How this gravel, stone and rock calculator works

Gravel is sold by weight (tons) but measured by volume, so this calculator converts between the two in one pass, matching how most aggregate suppliers quote and deliver.

Start with the shape of the space — a straight rectangle, a circle for a fire pit ring or tree well, or multiple sections added together for an L-shaped or irregular area. Multiply that area by your depth (converted from inches to feet) to get a loose volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards, the unit most suppliers price bulk orders by.

If the compaction/overage box is checked, the calculator adds 15% to that volume, because loose gravel settles once it's spread and tamped — the yardage you order needs to already account for that settling, not just fill today's hole. It's turned on automatically for crusher run and road base, since those are almost always compacted into a structural base, and left off for materials used as a loose decorative layer.

From cubic yards, multiplying by the material's density converts to tons — the unit most suppliers actually invoice. The calculator also shows a bagged-gravel equivalent using a standard 0.5-cubic-foot retail bag, useful for small jobs where a bulk delivery minimum doesn't make sense.

Straight geometry at 1.4 tons per cubic yard — crushed stone's typical density; pea gravel runs similar, crusher run nearer 1.5, lava rock far less. One ton at 2 inches covers a parking-space-sized patch; at 6 inches it covers a third of that. Compacted base courses also need the 15–20% loose-extra explained in the waste and compaction reference — it's compaction, not waste.

How many tons of gravel do I need for a given number of cubic yards?
Multiply cubic yards by the material's density. Most crushed stone, pea gravel, and decomposed granite run about 1.4 tons per cubic yard; crusher run and road base compact denser at roughly 1.5; sand and river rock sit closer to 1.35. Pick a material above and this calculator does that multiplication for you.
How deep should a gravel driveway be?
A decorative path only needs 2-3 inches. A shed pad or paver base is typically 4 inches. A driveway that will carry vehicle weight needs 6-8 inches of crusher run or road base, laid and compacted in two or three separate lifts rather than dumped and tamped all at once, since a single thick lift won't compact evenly all the way through.
What's the difference between crushed stone, crusher run, and pea gravel?
Crushed stone (like #57) is a single angular size that interlocks loosely and drains well, so it's used for drainage beds and decorative topping. Crusher run (also sold as road base or quarry process) blends stone sizes down to fine dust, which compacts into a dense, load-bearing base. Pea gravel is small and rounded, which looks and walks nicer but won't lock together, so it's not used as a structural base.
Why does compaction matter, and how much extra should I order?
Loose gravel settles roughly 10-20% once it's spread and tamped down, so the volume you dump today isn't the finished volume. This calculator adds 15% when the compaction/overage box is checked — on by default for crusher run and road base — to cover that settling. Leave it off for a decorative top layer that won't be compacted.
Is it cheaper to buy gravel in bags or by the truckload?
Bagged gravel from a home center usually costs several times more per ton than a bulk delivery, since you're paying for packaging and retail handling. Bags make sense under roughly half a cubic yard — about 27 standard 0.5-cu-ft bags. Above that, a bulk delivery is almost always the better price per ton, even after adding a flat delivery fee.
How much gravel can a dump truck deliver in one load?
A typical tandem-axle dump truck carries about 10-16 tons of aggregate per load under standard state weight limits. Orders above that need a second delivery or a larger tri-axle truck — most suppliers handle that automatically once they know your tonnage, but it can affect the delivery fee.
