Bathroom Remodel Cost Calculator

This small bathroom remodel cost calculator gives you an itemized budget for a 5×8-and-up bathroom — powder room through primary / master suite — instead of a single guessed number. Pick your bathroom's size, scope, and finish tier, then add the specific upgrades that apply — tub-to-shower conversion, a tiled walk-in shower, a double vanity, plumbing moves, a heated floor — to see the cost broken out by trade, with a total range and a labor-vs-materials split.

Plain-English tour

How bathroom remodel costs are calculated

Bathroom remodel costs don't scale neatly with square footage the way flooring or paint do — a toilet, a vanity, and a tub or shower cost close to the same to buy, plumb, and waterproof whether the room is a cramped 20 sq ft powder room or a 100+ sq ft primary suite. So instead of a single $/sq ft rate, this calculator starts from a base package priced directly by size band, scope, and finish tier, then adds the specific upgrades you choose on top.

The base package is split across six trades for the itemized table — demo, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing/tile, fixtures, and vanity/finish — using a fixed allocation (waterproofing and tile — quantity and waste worked out in the flooring calculator — get the largest share, at 28%, because wet-area work is the most labor-intensive part of almost any bathroom job). Upgrades like a tub-to-shower conversion or a heated floor are priced separately and added on top of the base package before the region multiplier is applied.

A cosmetic refresh leans on paint and hardware more than trades — the paint calculator turns the repaint into gallons. "Custom size" scales the mid-size (60 sq ft) package's rate per square foot to your entered size instead of looking up a different band — reasonable between a small full bath and a primary suite, less reliable further outside that range.

Worked example: a 5×8 small bathroom remodel cost

Take the calculator's own defaults: a small full bathroom (5 ft × 8 ft, 40 sq ft), replacing everything in the same footprint, at mid tier, with no additional upgrades, at the national-average region multiplier.

  1. 1. Base packagesmall · replace · mid = $10,500 – $15,000
  2. 2. Upgradesnone selected → adders = $0
  3. 3. Region ×1.00total stays $10,500 – $15,000
  4. 4. Per sq ft10,500÷40 to 15,000÷40 = $263 – $375/sqft
  5. 5. Largest tradewaterproofing & tile $2,940 – $4,200 (28%)
  6. 6. Labor ~55%$5,775 – $8,250
  7. 7. Materials ~45%$4,725 – $6,750
  8. 8. DIY-safe savings$630 – $900 (half the vanity & finish line)

Add a tub-to-shower conversion and a tiled walk-in shower to that same example: $2,350 + $3,250 = $5,600 before the region multiplier, moving the total to $16,100–$20,600 — over half again the base price, which is why both upgrades are their own line items instead of being folded into "replace in place."

Primary / master (100+ sqft)$9,000–$14,000$17,500–$25,000$27,000–$36,000

Mid finish tier, national-average region, before upgrades — these are the same base packages the calculator auto-fills, so the table and the tool can never disagree. The 5×8 (40 sqft) row is the standard benchmark because it's the most common secondary-bath footprint in US homes; contractors quote bathroom renovation costs the same way — a base package plus named upgrades.

Base package ranges are cross-checked against published national remodeling cost surveys and contractor-facing bathroom estimating guides for pull-and-replace and full-gut scopes at each size band. Frequently asked questions

Does a tub-to-shower conversion hurt resale value?
It can, if it leaves your home with zero bathtubs — many buyers, especially families with young children, treat a home with no tub anywhere as a drawback. If you have two or more full bathrooms, converting the tub in a secondary bath while keeping at least one tub elsewhere is the lower-risk version of this project; converting the only tub in a one-bathroom home is the version most likely to matter at resale.
How long does a small bathroom remodel actually take?
A cosmetic refresh (paint, hardware, a vanity swap, no tile work) commonly runs 3-5 days. A replace-in-place remodel that redoes tile, fixtures, and vanity typically takes 1-3 weeks, mostly driven by tile-setting and waterproofing cure times, not labor hours. A full gut with a layout change commonly runs 3-6 weeks once demo, rough-in inspections, tile, and finish work happen in sequence — each trade generally waits for the previous one's inspection to clear.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel?
Most jurisdictions require a permit when you move plumbing or add a fixture (relocating a toilet, adding a second sink), touch electrical circuits, or change the room's footprint or framing. A like-for-like refresh — new paint, a new vanity in the same spot, swapped fixtures on existing supply lines — often doesn't trigger one. Permit rules are set locally, not nationally, so confirm with your building department before a full gut or any plumbing relocation; this calculator's own "plumbing relocations" field is a good prompt to make that call.
What's the cost per square foot by scope?
Using this calculator's own 5x8 (40 sq ft) example at mid tier: a cosmetic refresh runs roughly $138–$225/sq ft, a replace-in-place remodel roughly $263–$375/sq ft, and a full gut roughly $450–$625/sq ft. Small bathrooms run higher per square foot than larger ones at every scope, because a toilet, sink, and tub or shower cost close to the same to plumb and waterproof regardless of the room's size — those fixed costs are just spread over far less floor area.
What is the average cost of a bathroom remodel?
Using this calculator's own base packages at mid tier: a powder room refresh starts around $2,000, a 5x8 replace-in-place remodel — the most common project — runs $10,500–$15,000, and a primary-bath full gut runs $27,000–$36,000 at mid tier, reaching $34,000–$46,000 or more at high tier with premium finishes. There is no single honest average across those scopes, which is why this page prices by size band and scope instead of quoting one number.
Why does a small full bathroom cost more per square foot than a primary bathroom?
Because the expensive parts of a bathroom — a toilet, a vanity, a tub or shower, and the plumbing and waterproofing behind all three — cost roughly the same whether the room is 40 sq ft or 100 sq ft. A primary bathroom spreads that same fixed cost over more floor area, so its $/sq ft comes in lower even though its total is higher. In this calculator's own tables, a 5x8 replace-in-place remodel prices out higher per square foot than the same scope in a primary bathroom.
